We have had quite a week of trips and adventure. I had a week of vacation and the wife and I set out on four trips just the two of us and then Friday and Saturday we took the kids. the weather was super all week and i even got some golf in on Friday morning.
Monday-we went to the Wurstmarkt in Bad Durkheim, this festival is about 600 years old. Bad D. is on the German wine road or Wienstrasse so wine was a big part of the fest. there were also a lot of carnival rides, i always think of Austin Powers when i am around carnivals. Austin feared two things Nuclear weapons and carnies. Anyway, we spent the afternoon trying several different foods. German carnivals have very good selections of food. before we knew it we were full and had not even had a bratwurst. There was a go cart track like the one my brother and i would design when we were kids. it is shown in the pictures.
Tuesday-on Tuesday we went on a church temple trip to Frankfurt and had pizza in a near by pizzeria with all the missionaries.
Wednesday-we went to Trier. Trier is a town in Germany on the Mosul river that was founded by the Romans in the second century, although there were probably Germans living there first. there are several old Roman ruins and some very beautiful cathedrals. A religious relic, the robe of Christ is in one of the cathedrals. Trier has a nice central section that is a walking only area with lots of shops and places to eat. Sorry not many pictures, just me and a big stinky foot and the wife and i in front of a palace.
Thursday-Another castle trip. this time we went to Dahn and the castle complex near there. there are three castles on a single mountain top. they are for the most part in ruin but here the Germans have put up almost 40 small signs that tell you what things are. there are stables and cisterns and gate guard rooms. it was very nice to be able to know what we were looking at instead of just a lot of walls and passageways. there is also a small museum, with some medieval artifacts. the museum was pretty good. to get to the top of the tower required a climb up the ladders shown. it was a bit more scary than it looks. usually there is a spiral staircase not a ladder.
Friday-after golf and Fish and Chips, another story, w
e got the kids from school and went to a High ropes course. the Germans have not suffered from the same lawsuit problems that we have so they have these very fun adventure things that you can do. after 10 minutes of checkout you are off on your own into the trees for some very physical and challenging adventure. there are zip lines and lots of crossing between two trees on small ropes or logs. some of the courses are 50 or 60 ft up. here is the website for the course www.k1-waldseilpark.de

Saturday-we all went to Heidelberg to the Autumn fest or Herbts fest. we took the train and all of us round trip and bus and trolley included was 19 euro, not 19 each but 19 total. it takes a bit longer than a drive but for me not having to drive and park it was very nice. we toured the famous castle and walked the old streets sampling food and music. it was a very nice day. as a point of order we did not eat any of the pig shown in the picture.
